Fredy Martinez, is member of my High Priest Group. He, and his wife, have sent the past 4 1/2 years as missionaries in the SLC Inner-City Mission. He explained this developing Church project.

00:0000:00

A number of sources reveal Joseph's development of the Godhead contrasting his views before and after the Nauvoo period. This provides some important insight to sort out that some views have been discarded and replaced by others.

One caller led the discussion into the topic of polyandry - a wife married to two husbands contemporaneously.
00:0000:00

Historic Christian Deity Terms are compared and contrasted with historic Mormon ideas: 1. Monotheism  2. Polytheism  3. Henotheism  4. Unitarian  5. Binitarian  6. Trinitarian.

00:0000:00

Critics claim regarding Joseph's First Vision accounts, 1832 & 1838, are unimpressive examining the sources from June 1830 to the end of 1832.

00:0000:00

There have been some who claim that Joseph Smith borrowed Ethan Smith's 1825 book, View of the Hebrews, as the basic foundation of the Book of Mormon.

There are a number of approaches to come to a conclusion. Several were considered.
00:0000:00
00:0000:00

My guests, Matt Nelson and Chad Powell, are Masons and Mormons living in Provo:

  • Masonry: history past and present
  • Problems about Masonry and Mormons at Nauvoo
  • Situations in early Utah and now
  • Religion and Politics
  • Beliefs
  • Satanic?
00:0000:00

I spent some time talking with a caller on the Mountain Meadows Massacre. He made many claims which I believe solid sources rebut.

  • Brigham Young ordered the massacre through George A. Smith
  • His purpose was to murder and steal always accepted by Mormons
  • He knew all about the wagon train
  • The upcoming 1857 Utah War did not concern his interest in the MMM
  • He declared independence from the U.S. on August 24, 1857 celebration
  • BY was guilty but was given a pardon by the President
  • Denied that John D. Lee reported to BY in September
00:0000:00

Ezra Booth, one of the earliest converts soon left and wrote 9 letters which were published in the Ohio Star newspaper from Oct 13-Dec 8, 1831. He addressed many topics claiming accurate accounts, events and beliefs of Mormonism. Much is contrary from Mormon sources. I addressed several of his claims which probably all historians would obviously conclude false.

  • Joseph Smith claimed all authority and live beyond any gospel laws and principles
    • Commit adultery
    • Kill the husband
    • Common consent
    • Church covenants
I also addressed a claim by Lee Baker 2 weeks ago, that the First Presidency and the Twelve made a false statement about Joseph Smith in the 2008  2009 Priesthood and Relief Society Manual.
It is difficult on many topics to sort out divergence sources to decide which to accept.
00:0000:00

Christopher Smith, interested in Mormon history, has published an article in the Journal of Mormon History, "Playing Lamanite: Ecstatic Performance of American Indian Roles in Early Mormon Ohio."

Early Church history (1830-1831, in Kirtland) is open to considerable interpretation of diverse contradictions of many early and late sources.
00:0000:00
00:0000:00
00:0000:00

Lee Baker, an ex-Mormon, was my guest. We were having some difficulty discussing divergent views. These were included:

  • Lee contrasting D&C 132:39 (that is using only a portion of v. 39) with Jacob 2:24 (leaving out verse 23 & 30).
  • Lee claimed that D&C 132 was not printed until 1876. My point was that it was first published by the Deseret News in September 1852, by Orson Pratt in Washington, DC 1853 and that it was the topic hundreds of times from 1852 to 1876. He would not acknowledge this.
  • D&C 1835 ed. was a topic which would have been worthwhile. He has maintained that the Church is hiding this from LDS. I was attempting to claim that Deseret Book has been selling the D&C 1835 ed. from 2011, but my explanation did not materialize. A meaningful discussion on the article Marriage also did not materialize. I will pursue this another time.
  • Lee wanted to talk about the Joseph Smith Translation. This was a very good topic. He wanted to discuss Gen 17 about JS's change. I wanted to tie this in with Moroni 8, Acts 15, the writings of the Apostolic Fathers (95 AD - 150 AD) and the 1611 KJV translators spin on a number of OT passages. This would be a good topic.
  • We went around and around about a phrase in the Teachings of the Presidents: Joseph Smith manual in chapter 43 and JS, many times, declaring that he is fallible, committed sin etc. mentioned in the D&C and in the JS manual, which Lee denied. See chapter 46 in the manual.
00:0000:00

With my guest, Paul Brandt, we discussed many thoughts and ideas on Sex:

  • Born with sexual desire?
  • Does sexual desire primarily urge procreation or sex relationship?
  • Only for procreation - married or not - homosexual or heterosexual?
  • Do, or soon will, LDS accept Same Sex Marriage?
  • Marriage - a major focus of the Church
    • With or without sex
    • Satisfaction
    • Continence
    • Increase or decrease sex drive
    • Many, probably most, in the resurrection will be single
    • Some LDS do not want marriage
    • Some LDS are married, but do not want children
    • Some LDS are divorced and do not to remarry
    • Some sex problems
    • Who is considered to ultimately make marital decisions, Church policy, the wife or the husband?
  • Same Sex issues
  • Birth control
  • Old Testament
  • New Testament
  • Celibacy
  • Eunuchs
  • Fornication or homosexual - which is the greater sin?
  • Statements from the First Presidency
00:0000:00
00:0000:00
00:0000:00

The initial topic addressed the impressive research of a Lutheran historian, Joachim Jeremias. He discovered a long forgotten teaching of Jesus about God, his Father, referred to by him and Paul: Abba. The meaning of this, according to Jeremias, was a powerful concept at the time of Jesus a very similar LDS belief today.

Several other topics discussed:
  • Old Testament
  • Jehovah
  • Holy Ghost
00:0000:00

Mormon History Association Convention 4-7 June 2015.

Some comments:
  • Statistics on men and women
  • Recent questions about Mormons and Catholics at Nauvoo
  • Indian War 1853
  • Ideas about Book of Mormon geography
  • 1954 issue about Blacks involving Pres. McKay, Africa, Brazil, Elders Peterson, Clark and others
  • Wilford Woodruff's diaries and the question of the future of his letters written from 1831-1898
00:0000:00

The Ensign, Gospel Doctrine and other Weekly Sunday School Topics, Priesthood & Relief Society manuals are not by any means the only sources provided by the Church for the Saints, past and present:

  • Religious Studies Center at BYU in is 40th anniversary
  • The project of Jeffrey Holland and BYU President Dallin Oakes
  • Bold new venture publishing the works of BYU's religion faculty
  • 2014 more than 100 articles published in many journals and 14 books published
  • 3 upcoming symposia this year at BYU
  • Two periodicals BYU Religious Education Review and the Religious Educator

Discussion with two callers on the question, Is religious scripture history?

Comments of Ethan Smith, author of View of the Hebrews 1823
00:0000:00

David Bokovoy is the author of Authoring the Old Testament. He is a faithful Latter-day Saint with an extensive Hebrew and Biblical scholarly background. This book has been written specifically for an LDS audience introduced into many fields of biblical scholarship typically foreign to LDS. Some topics discussed:

  • Common Mormon and non-LDS Christian views about the OT
  • Are our beliefs and doctrines today the same as when our religion began several thousand years ago?
  • What are the sources for many portions of the OT?
  • Christian translators in the 1611 KJV introduced Christ into the OT by adding many notations in the many chapter summaries.
  • How do Mormon views about Elohim and Jehovah compare with what we find in the OT?
  • There are different views about the Joseph Smith Translation of the OT.
  • Joseph Smith's interest in Hebrew and the OT is very interesting.
  • Some thoughts on Book of Abraham, Book of Mormon, OT and history.
00:0000:00

129. Conference

05Apr15

Some comments and discussion:

  • Elder Holland about creation
  • The claim that Jesus did not use hairspray
  • How can you believe if doctrine changes?
  • Martin Harris was only interested in money
  • A caller maintains that the US should follow the OT, thus executing homo-sexuals
  • Ancient sources explain black skin
00:0000:00

Further conversation with Charley Harrell on more LDS aspects on revelation, inspiration, visions, canonization, in the wards and stakes.

00:0000:00

Some LDS statements on Revelation:

  • From JS to the present - revelation is considered available for all
  • Are there reasons for testing claimed revelation?
  • Authority of Church membership
  • Have all JS's revelations been accepted?
  • Questioning David Whitmer's 1887 pamphlet
  • Discussing translation of the BM with a caller
  • Discussing with 2 callers: JS's view of the future in 1828-1830

125: Universalism: thoughts of William Barclay

Guest Host: Don Ormsby, hosting this night (2015-02-15) Van Hale.

Don quoted from William Barclay, a Presbyterian, a well-know New Testament scholar, New Testament translator, author of a 20 volume New Testament commentary and numerous historical and doctrinal books. His view on Universalism (that ultimately almost, or all, of the human family will find its way into God's kingdom) is closer to Joseph Smith's view than that of Calvin. The following are some of the topics from several of the callers:
  • Atheist claims that the LDS Church has been dramatically altered from its original foundation
  • One Claims no evidence that anyone has seen the Golden Plates
  • Comments on John Dehlin's being disfellowshipped
  • This claim that LDS are not to quote the past Prophets
  • A non-Mormon told of his study with the Book of Mormon it leads one to pursue the life and teachings of Jesus
  • Another claims that Elder McConkie placed homosexuality close to murder; that Jesus placed one who should lust in his heart, is an adulterer, but that Pres. Hinckley's position was a far different point of view.

124. Joseph Smith's Plan: Sources from 1828-6 April 1830-1

When Joseph was 22 & 23 years old, we have some documents produced from 1828 to 1830, from which we encounter many aspects of his plan. Following are several points discussed:

  • One purpose of the Book of Mormon
  • The failure of the first 116 pages
  • What happened
  • Could Joseph fail?
  • Could he succeed?
  • What was a part of his Plan beyond the Book of Mormon?
  • Who would be involved in the project?
  • Could the project succeed after Martin Harris' blunder?
  • It is most remarkable to consider many of Joseph's initial aspects of the Plan
I will pursue this in an upcoming program.

PLURAL MARRIAGE: Brian Hales, (researcher, editor & author) joined with me tomorrow night (Sun • Jan 11 • 5-7 pm MST) to discuss his new book. His wife, Laura, also participated adding her thoughts to the discussing.

Two years ago, he published a 3 volume set on Joseph Smith's introduction to plural marriage including all known sources. Just recently he uploaded all of these sources available for those interested in what is by far the most comprehensive collection.

This April 2015 his new book will be available 350 pages to condense the 3 volume set to be more readable for a larger audience.

We addressed some topics:
  • Questions determining Joseph Smith's views
  • Is PM: 1. Sex  2. Family or 1. Family 2. Sex?
  • Sealing for time only
  • Sealing for time & eternity
  • Sealing for eternity only
  • Polyandry
  • Relationship of Parley P Pratt & his wife
  • Civil marriage

118. Mormon Marriage

A story by Wilted_Flower was posted on the internet (http://redd.it/2pawvc). The author tells of her experience with several Mormon men which did not appear to result in marriage but with a non-Mormon man, their marriage was imminent. Her bishop discouraged this relationship. After a number years, at the age of 58, never married, she left the Church because it had robbed her of this one opportunity.   More than 200 comments were posted.

I invited a guest to talk about the Church's teaching and encouragement about marriage in contrast to the claims of Wilted_Flower and most of the comments.

Guest: Paul Brandt is a psychotherapist specializing in individual, couples and family therapy. He has maintained a private practice in the Salt Lake City area for twenty-two years.

These are phrases typical of those portraying the Church:
  • I just hate the church and what it does to peoples lives.... No more mormon men for me.
  • You were lied to, had your youth and your first love stolen from you... you missed your chance of happiness.
  • This cult took everything from you.
  • I hate seeing another example of the Mormon faith crushing the happiness out of a girl's life.
  • Mormonism Enslaves women
  • ...indoctrinated and brainwashed

Some discussion:
  • There are many Church doctrines and teachings that seem contrary to the comments.
  • In regard to Wilted_Flower who made the decision?
  • Marriage is not for everyone
  • Mormonism is not for everyone
  • Many diverse views among LDS
  • There are many reasons for personal relationships not based upon indoctrination.
  • Paul discussed six stages of moral reasoning
  • A caller gave examples of mixed messages
  • Paul spoke of an LDS program - Strengthening Marriage - started about 6 years ago
  • A caller quoted from the Bishop's Handbook about regarding decisions on marriage or divorce

116. Looking Into Scripture #4

Revelation 14:4 - What was the author saying:

The first redeemed will be 144,000 men:
  • not defiled with women
  • no sexual relations
  • did not do sinful things with women
  • spiritual undefiled

  • virgins
  • as pure as virgins
  • kept themselves pure
  • celibates
  • they are chaste

Is celibacy superior to marriage?

Does the author's point contradict Jesus' teaching (Mat 19:4-6); Paul's (Eph 5:22-33) and the author's of Hebrews (13:4)?

00:0000:00

115. Looking Into Scripture #3

Reasons for different conclusions:

  • Psalm 8:5 - did the author mean that man is little less than angels. heavenly beings, gods, a god or God (Elohim)?
  • Ezekiel 18 - discussed in our Gospel Doctrine class, are children responsible for the sins of their parents?
  • John 1:1 - was the author's point that Jesus was God?: Different translator's conclusion; Joseph Smith's Translation
  • John 1:18 - Is the answer, according to the entire Bible, that any man has ever seen God? Joseph Smith's. JS Translation
  • Thinking about JS's early concepts does it appear that he believed that God and the Son (Jesus)  are numerically 1 or 2?
  • Looking into Rev. 1:6 what was JS's concept that Jesus' God has a father?

00:0000:00

114. Looking Into Scripture #2

  • Did Adam and Eve have navels?
  • Manifesto - 1890
  • Acts 20:28
  • Acts 20:35
  • Elohim

112.Conversation with the author Karen Phippen Browne:

Help Thou Mine Unbelief: Scientific, Historical and Spiritual Evidence of God (published 2013)

Karen has spent many years as a journalist and editor and I assume this I have find her book very well-written. I include two paragraphs from her Preface:

Most people I have known and served with over the years never knew about these misgivings, because my whole background and persona reflected religious strength and testimony. I was born into an active LDS family, was faithful to my baptismal and temple covenants, served a full-time mission, married in the temple, and raised three wonderful children in the ways of the Lord. I served in many capacities within the wards and stakes where I resided and tried very hard to reach out to others to help them wherever I was needed. In other words, I was a typical Latter-day Saint woman.

But underneath it all, I was a Doubting Thomas. Despite my activity in the Church, there was always within me a steaming cauldron of doubt and insecurity about the very belief system to which I had dedicated my life. Most of the time, I could keep the pot on simmer because after all, I would tell myself, any religious belief a person professes is simply a matter of choice anyway. I chose to believe, just like everybody else. But still that persistent little voice of doubt would bubble up until, from time to time, the cauldron would boil over requiring yet another Herculean effort to get the lid back on.

We only touched some of the numerous topics she has pursued. Her book begins "Evidence of Divine Creation" and concludes with "Help for the Doubting Thomas." I highly recommend her approach providing many of her thoughts and pondering a wide range of LDS and non-LDS sources identified in the Index.

109.Brigham Young's Remark?

"Brethren, this Church will be led onto the very brink of hell by the leaders of this people, then God will raise up the one `Mighty and Strong' spoken of in the 85th Section of the Doctrine & Covenants to save and redeem this Church."
                                               by Brigham Young [??]

DURING the past 90 years, many have cited this startling remark. I have found it in a numerous books, pamphlets, unpublished sources, un-counted times on the internet, hundreds in private and public conservation, twelve times in Truth magazine published from 1936 to 1952, and now I find it in the five volume set The Complete Discourses of Brigham Young, published in 2009.

Although, those who cite this remark, seldom give a source. But, some have given one or more of the following: a date, an event, a location, who were there, who heard it, written in a diary, found in the Church History Library and now in
The Complete Discourses of Brigham Young.

To me there are some things to think about.

Certainly, Brigham Young said many things which have been written, some which have been passed on orally, most never recorded and a number or statements have been attributed to Brigham Young, but not until 50 years after his death.

107.Author of The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith

Matthew Bowman is the author The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith. I began talking to him on the second hour. We talked about a number of developments from 1830 until now. I highly recommend this book for Mormons and non-Mormons.

During the first hour, I had:
    • a conversation with an ex-Mormon about his new view about Joseph Smith on plural marriage, and;
    • a conversation with an ex-Mormon who claims to be Jesus' prophet. We debated his claim that President Grant decided to replace the D&C with a digest version so LDS would not know about a number of doctrines.

        Mormon Doctrine: Mandatory and Forbidden

For various reasons many insist that there is much mandatory doctrine required of Mormons and much forbidden doctrine. Drawing from many sources and such enlightening examples as the Adam God theory and Polygamy, I demonstrate that, from its beginning, the LDS Church has had very little official doctrine and almost no mandatory or forbidden doctrine.
